Phil Varone scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year and Nathan Lieuwen made 22 saves as Rochester dropped a 3-1 decision at Toronto.
After a scoreless first period, the Marlies sent a pair of shots high glove side over Lieuwen early in the middle frame to stake a 2-0 lead.
University of Maine alum Spencer Abbott was the first to connect with an accurate shot at 1:30. Less than two minutes later, Erie Otters product Connor Brown chipped one under the cross-bar at 3:16, forcing Chadd Cassidy to burn his time out and lay into the team.
Greg McKegg added to the Toronto lead at 11:00 of the second period with a short-handed goal to make it a 3-0 game.
Varone finally got the Amerks on the board with his ninth point of the season at 14:03, but unfortunately it would be the game’s final goal. Mark Pysyk and Luke Adam picked up assists on the play. Adam’s helper extends his point streak to four games.
