11/7 Recap: Reinhart runs show in return

In Friday action, Sam Reinhart scored twice in his WHL season debut to earn the game’s first star as Kootenay held on for a 4-3 victory over Edmonton. Reinhart wasted little time making his presence known, scoring on his first shift just 32 seconds into play for his first goal of the year. He’d again provide a quick strike, picking a short side corner from a tough angle while on a two-man advantage just 21 seconds into the middle period. The ICE captain could have had a hat trick in the final minute with an empty net goal, but he instead failed to connect on a pass and the unselfishness nearly cost the ICE as the play transitioned back up ice.

Elsewhere in the WHL, defenseman Brycen Martin finished with a plus-two rating as Swift Current rode a Colby Cave natural hat trick to a 4-3 overtime triumph at Lethbridge. Martin will continue looking for his first goal of the year Saturday when the Broncos take on Reinhart and the ICE.

OHL

Justin Bailey scored his 10th goal of the year and added two assists as Kitchener blasted Peterborough 8-2. Bailey’s hot start has seen him collect 10 goals and 21 points in his first 14 games. Eric Cornel ended his six-game drought with a third-period goal for the Petes to give him 14 points (5+9) in 15 contests. Bailey will look to continue his tear on Saturday when the Rangers visit Plymouth. Cornel’s Petes are off until Sunday’s meeting with Oshawa.

Brendan Lemieux snagged a goal and an assist as Barrie blew past Sudbury 9-2. Lemieux now has nine goals and 16 points through his first 14 games. Nick Baptiste was held without a point for the second straight game for the Wolves, who return to the ice Saturday versus Belleville. Lemieux and the Colts travel west to Sault Ste. Marie.

QMJHL

Vaclav Karabacek snapped a four-game goal funk with his fifth of the year as Gatineau was defeated by Charlottetown 4-1. A 21-goal scorer a season ago, Karabacek has struck just twice in his last dozen games. Islanders rookie Filip Chlapak (’15) notched a three-point night with two late goals and an assist, while fellow draft eligible Daniel Sprong supplied a pair of helpers for the winners. Karabacek and the Olympiques return to work Sunday versus Baie-Comeau.

In case you missed it, Mikhail Grigorenko and Joel Armia combined for a pretty goal and Jake McCabe got into his first fight as a pro in the Amerks’ loss to Binghamton.

NCAA

Hudson Fasching (+2) picked up an assist and five shots on goal as No. 1 Minnesota pitched a 5-0 shutout over Notre Dame. The sophomore power forward entered the zone down the middle of the ice and dished the puck to the left wing where Leon Bristedt quick-released a high shot for his first-ever NCAA goal. Cal Petersen made his fourth straight start for the Irish, making 39 saves in defeat. Notre Dame freshman Connor Hurley (-1) went without a point for the third straight game while skating as the third line center. Christian Isackson (+1) contributed two shots on goal for the victorious Gophers. The teams will complete the Big Ten/Hockey East Challenge set on Sunday afternoon.

Anthony Florentino finished with an even rating as Providence got past Merrimack 3-2. Fifth-year senior Mark Adams was paired with freshman Jake Walman (STL) on the Friars’ bottom pair, finishing the game with a plus-one rating. The teams close the home-and-home conference set Saturday at Merrimack.

Judd Peterson (-1) produced one shot on goal as St. Cloud State lost to Minnesota-Duluth 3-2 in overtime. The Bulldogs will look to get the split when the teams play it back on Saturday.

Brad Navin logged one shot on goal as Wisconsin continued their early season struggles with a 4-3 loss to No. 2 North Dakota. The former WCHA rivals meet again Saturday night in Madison.

Max Willman (-2) recorded three shots on goal as Brown dropped a 5-2 decision to St. Lawrence. The Bears host Clarkson on Saturday.

Sean Malone was inactive for the second-straight game as Harvard blanked RPI 4-0. The Crimson visit Union on Saturday.

USHL

Christopher Brown was quiet as Green Bay was doubled 4-2 at Dubuque. The Gamblers are at Waterloo on Saturday.

ECHL

Justin Kea finished minus-one with three shots on goal as Elmira lost at Kalamazoo 3-2. The Jackals and Wings will resume acquaintances on Saturday.
