11/22 Recap: Lemieux, Compher strike twice; Makarov shines

In Saturday action, Brendan Lemieux scored 1:00 into the opening period and later added a second marker as Barrie was defeated by Peterborough 4-3. Lemieux’s pair of power play tallies, his second two-goal performance of the season, earned him the game’s number two star. He has 19 points (12+7) in 17 games this season, including five goals in his last five outings. Eight of his 12 goals have come with the man advantage.

Petes forward Eric Cornel was named the game’s number three star thanks his game-winning goal and an assist, and now has his second three-game point streak of the season. Cornel’s productive night keeps him above the point-per-game line with 21 (7+14) at the 20-game mark.

Both clubs go right back at it on Sunday with the Petes visiting Mississauga and the Colts traveling to Belleville.

QMJHL

Vaclav Karabacek scored the game-winning goal for the second straight night and added a helper as Gatineau cruised past Acadie-Bathurst 4-1. Karabacek has goals in back-to-back games for the first time this season, and a total of four in his last six. Gatineau gets back to work Friday versus Quebec.

WHL

Sam Reinhart picked up a power play assist to extend his point streak to seven games since returning from Buffalo as Kootenay blanked Medicine Hat 3-0. Reinhart has collected 16 points total for the ICE, who have now gone 6-1 since getting their captain back. Kootenay completes the three-game weekend on Sunday when they host Moose Jaw.

Brycen Martin added his 10th assist to his season resume as Swift Current skated to a wild 8-7 win at Saskatoon. Defenseman Brett Lernout, who was selected by Montreal (73rd overall) one spot ahead of Martin at the 2014 draft, paced the Broncos with a hat trick to earn the game’s number one star. Swift Current plays a mid-week tilt at Edmonton on Wednesday,

NCAA

J.T. Compher recorded his first two goals of the season and added an assist as Michigan earned the split in the Big Ten series with an 8-1 thrashing of Penn State. Compher, who went without a goal in his previous 10 games, now has nine points (2+7) entering next weekend’s set with RPI.

Anthony Florentino did not play due to an undisclosed injury as Providence earned a 1-0 shutout victory at New Hampshire. Fairport, NY product and reigning Hockey East Player of the Week Trevor Mingoia scored the game’s only goal. Mark Adams finished with an even rating on his usual pairing with freshman Jake Walman (STL). The Friars are back in action Tuesday versus Army.

Judd Peterson did not factor into the scoring as St. Cloud State was clipped by North Dakota 3-2. The Huskies continue the schedule next weekend with a road set at Bemidji State.

Brad Navin was shut down as Wisconsin extended their season-opening losing streak to eight games with a 3-2 loss at Denver. The Badgers welcome Ferris State to the Kohl Center next weekend for a non-conference set.

Max Willman was blanked as Brown’s woes continued with a 4-0 loss at Cornell. The Bears will look to snap a six-game skid next Saturday when they host Connecticut.

USHL

Christopher Brown registered an assist as Green Bay was defeated by Madison 4-3 in a shootout. The Boston College commit has notched a point in seven of his last eight games en route to collecting a team-leading total of 13 (5+8) through 16 appearances. The Gamblers face the Capitols for the third straight game on Wednesday.

AHL

Andrey Makarov made a career-high 45 saves to earn the game’s number two star, and Mikhail Grigorenko snapped a six-game goal drought with his sixth of the year as Rochester came up short in a 4-1 loss to Adirondack. Grigorenko’s unassisted tally puts him at 11 points in his first 18 games.

The Amerks (8-9-1-0, third place North Division) will return home for a Wednesday tilt with Grand Rapids.

ECHL

Colin Jacobs earned a helper to extend his point streak to four games as Elmira doubled Wheeling 6-3. The Jackals and Nailers will play it back Sunday in Elmira.
