12/5 Recap: Malone comes up big in debut

Sean Malone logged a successful season debut Friday, notching goal and two assists to lead No. 8 Harvard to a 4-3 victory over Princeton. Malone put the Crimson up 3-2 at 1:35 of the third period and then earned a helper on Tyler Moy’s eventual game-winner five minutes later. The three-point night ties his career high set on January 14, 2014 in a 7-4 victory over Boston University. Malone had missed Harvard’s first 10 games of the year due to injury.



Elsewhere, Connor Hurley scored his third goal of the year and assisted on the game-winner as Notre Dame roared back with five third period markers to stun Massachusetts 7-5. Hurley put Notre Dame ahead 1-0 at 10:26 of the opening frame when he streaked down the left side and finished a Jake Evans feed. His third multi-point effort gives him eight points through 16 collegiate contests. Freshman goaltender Cal Petersen served as Notre Dame’s backup in the come-from-behind win.
J.T. Compher (+2) won a faceoff for a secondary assist as Michigan trounced rival Ohio State 8-3. The helper gives Compher 11 points (3+8) through 14 games.
Hudson Fasching (+1) extended his point drought to five games as No. 3 Minnesota blanked Michigan State 5-0. Senior forward Christian Isackson contributed two shots on goal for the Gophers.

Max Willman posted three shots on goal as Brown was hammered by Union 7-1. Willman has registered two points (1+1) as the Bears have won just twice in their first 10 games.


Brad Navin picked up an assist as Wisconsin lost to Penn State 5-2. Navin has points in two straight games for a total of three (1+2) on the year.

AHL

Mikhail Grigorenko made an excellent play to set up Johan Larsson for the Amerks only goal in a 4-1 loss to Binghamton. Larsson led the Amerks with five shots on goal, while Grigorenko’s helper gives him points in seven of his last eight contests.

Nathan Lieuwen stopped 24 of 28 shots in defeat. Joel Armia missed his third game in a row with an upper body injury.

QMJHL

Vaclav Karabacek connected for a pair of third-period assists as Gatineau was doubled by Chicoutimi 6-3. Karabacek has 22 points this season, including 10 in his last 11 games.

WHL

Sam Reinhart scored the game-winning goal at 5:39 of the third period as Kootenay edged Spokane 2-1. The power play tally extends Reinhart’s point streak to 12 games (7-17-24). The ICE are 10-2 since Reinhart’s return to junior.

Brycen Martin notched an assist as Swift Current toppled Lethbridge 5-2. The left-handed defender has 12 assists and an even rating through 30 games.

OHL

Eric Cornel (-2) produced two assists as Peterborough lost at Guelph 5-3. The 18-year-old forward has 25 points (8+17) in 26 games this season for the last-place Petes.


Justin Bailey finished with a minus-one rating as Kitchener was shut out by Owen Sound 3-0. The big winger has failed to get a point in five of his last six games.

Jean Dupuy was kept off the score sheet as Sault Ste. Marie cruised to a 4-0 victory at London. Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Hounds have a commanding 13-point lead on second-place Sarnia in the West Division standings. 

USHL
Christopher Brown finished with a minus-one rating as Green Bay was defeated 4-3 by Bloomington. Brown continues to lead the Gamblers in scoring at the 20-game mark with eight goals and 18 points.
ECHL

Justin Kea (-2) and Colin Jacobs (-1) were kept off the score sheet as Elmira was blanked by South Carolina 5-0. The Jackals look to get on track Saturday when they host Toledo.
