With a new coach and a few high-profile forwards joining CSKA for the 2024-25 KHL season, Prokhor Poltapov knows he has his work cut out for him if he wants to elevate above his current fourth line assignment.

The early results have been promising, with Poltapov capturing two goals and two assists in CSKA’s five preseason games. More importantly, the trust seems to be there with new Head Coach Ilya Vorobiev sending Poltapov over the boards late in close games and in overtime.

After doing all the work that left his linemate with a simple finish into an open net in CSKA’s preseason opener, Poltapov scored a goal of his own in his club’s second exhibition contest, showing his ability to finish around the net front in a 4-3 loss to Spartak Moscow.

During the first intermission of Thursday’s Moscow Mayor’s Cup opener, Poltapov described the simplicity of the role that Vorbiev expects from him.

“Always be a threat. Be the center of attention Get to the crease, attack, and be useful,” stated Poltapov when asked what he needs to do to elevate himself in the lineup.

He did not get on the score sheet in the victory, but he did check a few of those boxes with his heavy style and speed carrying the puck in space.

Poltapov got back on the score sheet Saturday with a play we’ve seen quite a bit from him since being drafted. Poltapov is quick identify the opportunity to become availability in transition. He’ll often break the zone, and skate backwards to accept a clearing pass to create an odd-man rush. He executed that trait to perfection, taking the puck down his left wing and feeding former Bridgeport Islander Ruslan Iskhakov for the finish to help CSKA to a 3-1 in over Torpedo.

Poltapov continued his impactful play Sunday in the Mayor’s Cup final when midway through the middle frame, the winger showed impressive strength and puck control to gain the zone. As CSKA pressured with shot attempts, Poltapov got body position on a Spartak defender and quickly buried a puck for his second goal of the preseason to put his club ahead 2-1.

Poltapov and CSKA open the KHL regular season September 5 against familiar crosstown foe Spartak Moscow.
