The continued emergence of Viljami Marjala has been put on a brief hold as the top centerman for TPS Turku is expected to miss the next three-to-four weeks after suffering an injury in Thursday’s preseason tilt with Assat Pori.
Marjala previously left TPS’ exhibition contest on August 24 with an apparent hand/wrist injury. He returned to practice in full the following Monday, but he may have re-injured the limb against Assat as he was seen over the weekend with his wrist and hand heavily taped.
Marjala’s injury is a troubling development for a TPS squad projected to compete in the middle of the pack in Liiga this season. Through five preseason contests, the 6-foot-1 pivot had collected a goal and six assists.
Marjala, who was selected by Buffalo in the fifth round of the 2021 draft, was named Liiga’s 2023-24 Rookie of the Year after leading TPS with 17 goals and 40 points while appearing in all 60 games.
