We recently chronicled Prokhor Poltapov’s sparkling start to the 2024-25 season that saw him record a short-handed goal and a game-high nine shots in CSKA’s 4-2 loss to Spartak.
Poltapov returned to work Sunday, and while not as sensational as his season debut, the 21-year-old left-winger continued to make a mark from his lower line role with a pair of third-period assists as CSKA pulled away from Admiral Vladivostok to earn a 6-2 victory.
Poltapov picked up his first helper 2:47 into the final frame, when he one-touched a pass from the right boards to Vitali Abramov, allowing his linemate to break out with speed and take it all the way down ice for the finish to extend CSKA’s lead to 4-2.
Later in the period, Poltapov made a standout play that illustrates his puck-hounding effort.
After penetrating the middle of the Admiral defense to create a quality shot attempt for his line, Poltapov executed a perfect stick lift to disrupt a sloppy Admiral transition out of the zone, and quickly sent a pass to Abramov low in the slot. Abramov sent the puck back in Poltapov’s direction at the doorstep, where Maxim Sorkin pounced on the bouncing biscuit and put the cherry on top of CSKA’s 6-2 victory.
Poltapov was a dog on a bone to make the play.
Poltapov, who registered the highest average speed of CSKA skaters in the win at 15.94 km/h, now has a goal and two assists through his first two games of the season. As he continues to pressure the opposition in Ilya Vorobiev’s remade lineup, it is fair to think he’ll build on the 12:46 average time on ice he’s earned to date.
