Ethan Miedema got his 2024-25 season started on a good note Thursday, netting the game-winning goal and firing six total shots as Kingston downed Peterborough 7-2.
With the Frontenacs holding a 2-1 lead in the second period, Miedema accepted pass as he gained the zone and got separation from the chasing defender to launch a quick far-side shot for the goal.
A season ago, Miedema netted a pair of goals in his season debut as he began the year on a five-game point streak that saw him collect four goals and four assists. He quickly cooled, though, finding the net just twice in his next 18 contests. He’d finish the year with 18 goals and 41 points while appearing in all 68 games.
Miedema is clearly a more explosive skater this season. That was the first thing that jumped out at Sabres rookie camp. Packaging that separation ability with his greatest asset, his quick-release shooting skill, should help Miedema avoid a similar lull this season. Adding greater elements of physicality will only help him assert his dominance at the major-junior level. It is worth noting that Miedema did not record a six-shot-on-goal game last season, so he’s already ahead of the game.
There is no reason Miedema cannot be a point-per-game player at a minimum this season, which would no doubt grab the attention of a Sabres organization eager to add a 6-foot-4, 212-pound winger to their contract stable. That’s not a given at this point, so Miedema demonstrating an uptick in scoring and better consistency in his two-way work rate will be the keys that open more doors for the next stages of his career.
