It was a good day for Sabres prospect goaltenders Friday, with Topias Leinonen and Scott Ratzlaff posting big performances to lead their clubs to victories.
In Sweden, Leinonen stopped all 24 shots for his first shutout of the year as Mora defeated Vasteras 3-0. Leinonen’s confidence continues to grow with his transition to a new club as he improves to 4-1 with a 2.06 GAA and .905 save%.
In the WHL, Ratzlaff stopped 41 of 42 shots to backstop Seattle to a 3-1 win over Kamloops. Ratzlaff, who has faced at least 40 shots in each of his starts, has gotten off to an excellent 2-0 start with a 1.50 GAA and .963 save%.
Elsewhere in Europe, Viljami Marjala sent a nice cross-ice pass for an assist as TPS fell to KooKoo 2-1 in overtime. Marjala has points in three straight games and has gotten on the scoresheet in five of six appearances this season.
In the collegiate ranks, Jake Richard continued his hot start to the season with a pair of goals as Connecticut lost to Holy Cross 4-3. Richard is tied for the national lead with four goals though his first three games.
Sophomore defensemen Maxim Strbak and Patrick Geary were on the ice for all three goals against as Michigan State was blanked by Boston College 3-0.
Brodie Ziemer opened the regular season on Minnesota’s second line with Oliver Moore (CHI) at center and Jimmy Snuggerud (STL) on the opposite wing as the Gophers blitzed Air Force 7-1. Aaron Huglen recorded one assist for the Gophers while winning just one of his 11 faceoffs.
Freshman defender Adam Kleber generated four shots on goal as Minnesota Duluth doubled Lowell 4-2.
Third-year forward Stiven Sardarian contributed three shots on goal in Michigan Tech’s 2-1 victory over Alaska.
Matteo Costantini logged one shot on goal and won 16 of 24 draws as Western Michigan toppled Ferris State 4-1.
In the OHL, Ethan Miedema scored for the third-straight game as Kingston defeated Sudbury 7-2. Miedema now has four goals through his first six contests for the second-straight season.
Simon-Pier Brunet went without a point in Drummondville’s 2-0 win over Val-d’Or. Brunet, who posted a three-point (1+2) night in Wednesday’s win, has collected seven points through his first six games of the season.
In the AHL, Tyson Kozak knocked in a third period goal off an Isak Rosen shot as Rochester opened the 2024-25 season with a 3-2 loss to Belleville. Rosen, Viktor Neuchev and Ryan Johnson added assists in defeat.
Earlier in the game, Johnson quickly sent a loose puck up the boards to spring Viktor Neuchev into the Senators zone. Neuchev made a nice pass to Josh Dunne, who finished the play for the Amerks’ first goal of the season.
